Phys Ed: Sitting Volleyball

Yesterday in Net/Wall, we learned about the beginning of volleyball and also beach volleyball. As we were going through the power points, a new game of volleyball showed up called Sitting Volleyball. Sitting Volleyball?! Um, how can that be?? It was created in 1956 by the Dutch Sports Committee for the disabled and sanctioned in 1978 by the International Sports Organization. In 1980 it was introduced into the Paralympics. Some modificaitons include a lower net, being able to block a serve and reach under the net without penalty and a small court. The players are also 6 vs. 6. I thought it was really neat how the game has been slightly modified so that all types athletes can play.

I can't believe that there is a volleyball game where you get to play sitting down! I am awful at volleyball (I am scared of the day when I have to teach it!), and I think that it would be awesome to learn that way. Also, that seems like it would help kids who feel uncomfortable competing all the time with the athletes in the class to have a chance. Making them all sit down will put them all on the same playing level. It takes everyone out of their comfort zone. Let me know how it goes if you play the game in class!!! :)

I had no idea about this. Pretty interesting information! This is a sport that I love to play at picnics, but am not well-versed in the sport. I'm glad we will have that class to learn more about it and its concepts. See ya Thursday!

I think its really neat that they are modifying games for the disabled individuals. Leslie made a good point about it putting the athletes at the same playing level as the rest of the class. That would definitly be a game I would think about using for a class.
